Un poste de postdoc à 80%

Descriptif du poste:

Le/la titulaire du poste sera un(e) spécialiste de l’histoire européenne de l’époque moderne. Il/elle sera appelé(e) à travailler sur des problématiques propres à l’histoire sociale et à la culture médicale dans le cadre du projet collectif sur l’histoire de l’allaitement maternel. Le champ d’étude spécifique comprendra l’étude de sources manuscrites (ego-documents, correspondances) et de textes médicaux européens, notamment francophones, pour les 17^e et 18^e siècles. Une sensibilité démontrée pour des approches genre sera un atout.

Le/la candidat(e) souhaité(e) devra être capable de travailler de façon indépendante et être à l’aise dans la collaboration avec une petite équipe. Il/Elle devra prendre part aux activités du groupe de recherche « Lactation in History », et publier ses résultats dans des revues internationales et en participant à un des projets de publication collective du groupe de recherche.

Qualifications demandées:

Doctorat en histoire (époque moderne, siècles XVII^e-XVIII^e) ou titre jugé équivalent ;
expérience de la recherche en archives ;
compétences linguistiques requises : français (langue de travail), anglais et allemand ; la connaissance du latin est souhaitée.

CRASSH (The Centre for Research in the Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities), with funding provided by the European Research Council, is sponsoring a project entitled Visual Representations of the Third Plague Pandemic. The project, led by Dr Christos Lynteris (PI), will run from 1 October 2013 to 30 September 2018. The project team will consist of three postdoctoral research associates who will work independently and in collaboration with each other and the director of the project. Each of the three posts will be held for 4 years, starting 1 May 2014 to 30 April 2018.

The three posts available (by region) are:

1) South Asia – key areas: India and Pakistan; secondary areas: Myanmar (Burma).

2) Africa – key areas: South Africa, Senegal, Egypt, Madagascar, Algeria; secondary areas: Nigeria, Tunisia

3) North and South America – key areas, Argentina, Brazil, California (USA), Hawaii (USA); secondary areas: Ecuador, Peru, Paraguay, Portugal

Applicants should apply for one of the three posts only. Applications are encouraged with regard to any relevant field of studies, including medical history, visual history, medical anthropology, visual anthropology, visual studies and regional studies. Applicants who can demonstrate experience in a) medical historical/anthropological research on plague; and/or b) medical historical/anthropological research on the visual representation of epidemic disease, are also encouraged to apply regardless of regional research experience for any one of the three posts.

Overall Project Description The project will collect and analyse primarily photographs as well as other visual documents of the third plague pandemic, which broke out in 1855 in Southwest China and raged across the globe until 1959, causing the death of approximately 12 million people. The aim of the project is to engage in a historical and anthropological analysis of this unprecedented global network of epidemiological photography, underlining its role in the negotiation of geopolitical, colonial and biopolitical relations at the turn of the twentieth century. While investigating the visual record of plague in their respective regions, researchers will engage in a collaborative and interdisciplinary analysis of the entangled history of the visual representation of the third plague pandemic, taking as a common analytical ground four different but vitally interlinked aspects of the visual representation of the pandemic: a) the built environment; b) civil disturbance and public order; c) death, corpses and burial; d) race, class and discrimination.

Job Description Each of the three postdoctoral research associates will cover one regional cluster afflicted by the third plague pandemic. Applicants should apply for one of the three posts. Each research associate will be expected to conduct research on the visual representations of the third plague pandemic in the appointed region through an examination of relevant published and archival sources. In collaboration with Dr Lynteris, each research associate will organise a workshop exploring one of the key themes of the project. All research associates are expected to participate in weekly work-in-progress seminars relating to the project and to provide the PI with regular work reports. Le réseau des jeunes chercheurs santé et société a été créé en 2003. Financé par l’Institut de recherche en santé publique, il est basé à la Maison des sciences de l’homme de Paris Nord. Le réseau propose une variété d’activités scientifiques, d’outils de communication et de formation. Il vise essentiellement à soutenir les initiatives des étudiants en master, doctorat et post-doctorat dans le champ des sciences sociales de la santé et à favoriser leur intégration professionnelle dans et hors du champ académique.

Missions

Sous l’autorité du directeur du réseau, les missions de ce poste sont les suivantes :

Gérer l’adhésion des nouveaux membres du réseau: accueil, information, etc. ;

Profil et qualités requises

Autonomie, capacité d’organisation, force de proposition ;
Doctorant-e dans le champ des sciences sociales de la santé (n’ayant pas de financement principal) ;
Connaissance des acteurs du champ de la recherche en sciences sociales de la santé ;
Une expérience dans l’animation de réunion ou de séminaire ou une expérience associative est un plus ;
Une connaissance de base des procédures de gestion universitaire est un plus ;
Bonne maîtrise des outils informatiques (Word, Excel, logiciel Word press).

en France et en Allemagne ca. 1800-1900 »

Annonce : Dans le cadre d’un projet de recherche franco-allemand, sous l’égide de l’Agence nationale de la recherche (ANR) et de la Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG), l’Université de Strasbourg recrute un(e) post-doctorant(e) en contrat à durée déterminée (12 mois renouvelables une fois) à compter du 1^er septembre 2013. Le candidat sera titulaire d’un doctorat en histoire, philosophie ou sociologie des sciences et sera spécialisé(e) dans le domaine de l’histoire/philosophie des sciences du vivant (incluant l’histoire de la médecine). La recherche s’appuiera sur la consultation de sources publiées et non publiées disponibles à la BNUS (Bibliothèque nationale universitaire de Strasbourg) et aux Archives nationales de Paris. Il est aussi attendu que le candidat publie dans des revues internationales à comité de lecture, qu’il participe aux workshops organisés dans le cadre du projet tout autant qu’il collabore à la rédaction des rapports scientifiques du projet.

Contexte général du projet: Le projet cherche à proposer un nouveau regard sur la genèse et le développement de la théorie cellulaire au XIX^e siècle. Un premier axe du projet visera à établir la généalogie des catégories centrales de la théorie cellulaire (« individu », « universalité », analogie organisme/société) entre 1800 et la publication des travaux de Schwann (1839) et ceci, dans une perspective franco-allemande. Le deuxième axe du projet sera orienté vers la réception de la théorie cellulaire en France, entre 1838 et 1900, en privilégiant deux lieux, Strasbourg et Paris, et en s’intéressant aux interactions entre différents champs de savoirs comme la botanique, la physiologie, la médecine et la sociologie. La question principale du projet est d’examiner de manière approfondie les nombreux enchevêtrements entre la théorie cellulaire et le contexte politique dans lequel elle évolua. Ceux-ci seront envisagés comme un processus de co-construction qui produisit, au XIX^e siècle, un nouvel ordre de la nature et du politique. À partir de comparaisons transnationales et transdisciplinaires, le travail mené en collaboration par les équipes française et allemande permettra de cerner les similitudes et les divergences entre des conceptions politiques et philosophiques, des facteurs épistémologiques et des pratiques de recherche qui ont marqué la genèse et le développement de la théorie cellulaire. Enfin, la démarche comparée visera à promouvoir le dialogue entre historiens des sciences des deux pays.

Localisation et rémunération : Le post-doctorant sera basé à Strasbourg et sera accueilli au sein du Département d’histoire et de philosophie des sciences du vivant (DHVS), Faculté de médecine. Il sera encadré par la responsable du projet POLCELL, Marion Thomas (SAGE-DHVS) et bénéficiera de l’environnement stimulant de l’Université de Strasbourg et des facilités de recherche et matérielles qui y sont offertes. La durée du post-doctorat sera de 12 mois (renouvelable une fois) à compter du 1^erseptembre 2013. Le recrutement sera effectué sous forme de contrat à durée déterminée. Le montant de la rémunération brute mensuelle est de 2500 euros (financement ANR).

The Centre for the History of Science, Technology and Medicine at Imperial College London is seeking a 3-year postdoctoral research associate to participate in a Wellcome Trust-funded programme of research into the topic: One medicine? Investigating human and animal disease circa 1850-2015.

You will contribute to a work package that examines the institutional, intellectual and disciplinary contexts where research into human and animal diseases intersected during the period 1920-2000. The aim is to expand conceptions of the animal’s role in research beyond that of a model of human disease, and to identify the multiple ways in which animals and their diseases have shaped the history of biomedicine. You will take ownership of this research, while also working closely and synergistically with other members of the research team.

You will have a PhD in the modern history of science, technology or medicine. You will be actively researching the twentieth century history of the biological or medical sciences, broadly construed, and have knowledge of at least one of the following national contexts: Britain, France, Germany, Canada and the USA. You will also have a strong publication record, and be committed to engaging with a range of academic and non-academic audiences.

Observation in the clinic, testing in the laboratory, curve-tracing machines: we may think we know how physicians know. We don’t. That is because we have, until recently, ignored the primary medium in which medical knowledge occurs, namely, writing and its organisation and reorganisation on paper. Written patient records are almost as old as medicine itself and still central to its practice. Remarkably unexamined is how these have generated knowledge. The project aims to address a question of interest for understanding science, technology and medicine in the broadest sense: How are generalizations drawn from particulars? Key techniques appear to be those of mastering on paper. These are shared across clinical, natural historical, pedagogical, forensic, accounting, administrative and other activity. To learn how paper technology works and how this has shaped knowledge over time, to show how human beings know and deal with the physical world through operations of pen and paper: the project aims to contribute to this wider goal through its focus on medicine.

to be held for up to five years from 1 October 2012 at the Institute for the History of Medicine, Charité Berlin, for the research project “Ways of Writing: How Physicians Know, 1550-1950” funded by the European Research Council.

Successful applicants will join Volker Hess, Andrew Mendelsohn, and Ruth Schilling to complete a seven-person research group by focusing on one of the following areas:

Physici and Protophysici. Physicians in administration in early modern northern Italy and the Spanish court. Writing practices at intersections of government, university, and natural history. Languages: Latin, Italian and/or Spanish required.
Republic of letters, medicine in the 17th and 18th centuries. Natural historical practices at work in medical practice and the learned world. Languages: German, French, and English required; Latin preferred.
Birth of the clinic revisited. Knowledge practices from bedside to handbook at Montpellier, Leiden, Edinburgh, Vienna, 1700-1800. Languages: Latin, English, and French required; reading knowledge of Dutch preferred.
The Laboratory in the Clinic, 1850-1950. Role of modern experimental sciences in observation and understanding of disease(s). Languages: English and German required.
Constructing clinical cases, 1900-1950. Medical knowing from clinical recording to scientific publication. Languages: English and German required. Experience in historical research on patient records preferred.

Applicants should have a strong academic track record and research potential in history or history of science and/or medicine as well as specific knowledge and skills needed to work on one of the research areas listed above.

Teamwork ability, readiness for cooperative research, and openness to multiple disciplinary approaches are essential.

Project members will communicate in English and German.

Applicants with at least a listening knowledge of German will be at an advantage.

Project members will have the opportunity to gain academic qualifications – PhD or Habilitation – through their work on the project.

## The Paul Klemperer Fellowship in the History of Medicine ## The Audrey and William H. Helfand Fellowship in the Medical Humanities

Each year the New York Academy of Medicine offers the Paul Klemperer Fellowship and the Audrey and William H. Helfand Fellowship to support work in history and the humanities as they relate to medicine, the biomedical sciences, and health.

The Klemperer Fellowship supports research using the Academy Library as a historical resource. It is intended specifically for a scholar in residence in the collections of the Academy Library.

The Helfand Fellowship more broadly supports work in the humanities, including both creative projects dealing with health and the medical enterprise, and scholarly research in a humanistic discipline as applied to medicine and health. Although residence is not obligatory, preference in the selection process will be given applicants whose projects require use of the resources of the Academy Library and who plan to spend time at the Academy.

The Helfand Fellowship and the Klemperer Fellowship each provide stipends of up to $5,000 to support travel, lodging and incidental expenses for a flexible period between June 1, 1999 and December 31, 1999. Besides completing research or a creative project, each Fellow will be expected to make a presentation at the Academy and submit a final report on the project. We invite applications from anyone — regardless of citizenship, academic discipline, or academic status — who wishes to use the Academy’s collections for historical research or for a scholarly or creative project in the medical humanities. Preference will be given to (1) those who show the need to use resources that are uniquely available at the Academy, and
(2) scholars or creative artists in the early stages of their careers.

Applicants may compete for either the Klemperer or the Helfand Fellowship, but not both. These fellowships are awarded directly to the individual applicant and not to the institution where he or she may normally be employed. None of the fellowship money is to be used for institutional overhead.

They are expected to have an integrated interest in history and philosophy of medicine and health, to be active in research and publication, and to be capable of teaching with an integrated approach to undergraduate and postgraduate students from a wide range of backgrounds. For the purposes of this position, medicine may be construed liberally to include clinical practices, biomedical research, public health, or psychological specialities, but with a strong preference for Western approaches. The Centre invites studentship applications for the History of Medicine route in our innovative 1-year MSc programme in the History of Science, Technology and Medicine. The studentship is funded out of our Wellcome Trust Strategic Award and pays fees plus maintenance.

The flexible structure of our MSc course allows students to study a wide range of case studies, from the emergence of professional scientific disciplines such as physics and biology, to the growth of ‘Big Science’ in the Cold war era, to the complex history of the National Health Service.

The course consists of lectures, seminars and tutorials. It combines a general introduction to the history of science, technology and medicine (HSTM) with a range of more specialised studies. Reflecting CHSTM’s established research strengths, these focus on nineteenth- and twentieth-century cases. We particularly stress the integrated understanding of HSTM through consideration of sites, institutions, and schools of thought and practice. We also pay particular attention to how scientists and medics have communicated with non-specialist audiences.

The course promotes transferable skills in research, critical writing, presentation and discussion. Students will gain experience in historical essay-writing before researching and writing an extensive dissertation on a specialised topic, supervised by experienced researchers.

This MSc is appropriate for students from any disciplinary background. It works both as an advanced study course for students with undergraduate experience in HSTM, and as a conversion route for students from other backgrounds (often in the sciences, but also including general history, social policy, and other fields).

The Institute of the History of Medicine at Johns Hopkins University invites applications for a tenure track position in the history of 20th century US medicine. The Institute of the History of Medicine is part of the School of Medicine. Founded in 1929, the Institute of the History of Medicine is dedicated to promoting scholarship on the history of medicine, disease, and the health sciences, and their relation to society, and to fostering a lively and collegial intellectual community. In addition, the Institute seeks to bring historical perspectives to bear on contemporary health issues. Faculty members teach graduate and undergraduate courses in the Schools of Medicine, Arts and Sciences, and Public Health.
